Transgender Awareness Week Highlights the T in LGBTQ
November 14, 2014
Transgender Awareness Week runs from November 13th through November 20th. This week is about highlighting the T in LGBTQ. The T stands for transgender, which is someone whose gender identity does not match the sex they were assigned at birth.
This week was created to increase the visibility of trans people and raise awareness about the issues they face on a daily basis. These issues range from challenges around the right to choose which bathroom to use to dealing with transphobic slurs and violence. The final day of Transgender Awareness Week is the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which honors the memory of transgender people or people who were perceived to be transgender, who were killed through acts of violence.
This week is an opportunity for trans people and their allies to educate the public and advocate for trans issues. Find out how to participate and learn more about Transgender Awareness Week and the Transgender Day of Remembrance on the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) website.
