Spider-Man’s Andrew Garfield Says Spidey Should Be Gay
July 30, 2013
The Amazing Spider-Man star, Andrew Garfield, was already pretty great, but he has become even more amazing! Entertainment Weekly recently reported that Andrew Garfield has been advocating for Spider-Man to be gay. Andrew is a big Spidey fan and has proposed the idea that Mary Jane—or MJ—be male instead of female. Not only did Andrew say that Spider-Man should be gay but also that he would totally play the part and has even picked out a fellow actor to play the role of his boyfriend, actor Michael B. Jordan who he is a fan of.
I met Andrew Garfield once, and this story doesn’t surprise me at all. Plus, it’s crazy to think that there are no mainstream gay, lesbian or bisexual superheroes. Andrew is quoted as saying to Entertainment Weekly, “Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking! So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?” There’s no better way to put it. Characters that many of us have followed for years and looked up to should be able to have a sexual orientation other than heterosexual.
I personally think this is just an overall cool idea. The fact that Andrew—a well-known actor who has appeared in films like The Social Network—suggested this makes it even better. He can reach lots of people with the message that being gay is OK and normal and that even Spider-Man could be gay.
