“Partial-birth” is an incorrect term used to describe a type of surgical abortion that is done in the last trimester of pregnancy only when a pregnant woman’s life is at risk. This is a rare medical procedure that makes up about 0.17-percent of all abortions performed in the United States. (That’s less than a quarter of one percent of all abortions.) Also see “late-term” abortion.
