Planned Parenthood Now Offers Online Video Visits
December 9, 2014
I was so happy to find out that Planned Parenthood is doing something that is at once radical and simple: allowing virtual visits for clients in need of birth control through an app.
The whole process is relatively simple. Download the app on either an Android or iOS device (sorry, Blackberry and Windows phone owners!). Login and connect with a clinician in seconds. The clinician will then talk to you about what type of birth control would best suit your needs. Then, the desired birth control will be delivered right to your doorstep—no prescription or trip to the pharmacy necessary.
This confidential service does come with a price tag of $45 for the chat, which would last about 15 minutes. It is also currently only being offered in Minnesota and Washington from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. But I believe this service will quickly spread, as Planned Parenthood works out ways to deal with insurance and expanding to more states. Planned Parenthood also plans on rolling out STD consultations through the app as well.
I have many friends that go to schools where contraception isn’t offered on campus and obtaining birth control is a hassle. Students like these would benefit tremendously from this service. Everyone should have access to birth control. A teen—or anyone—in need of birth control can simply download the app on their phones, talk for a bit and patiently wait for the birth control to arrive at their address.
So, would you be willing to give this service a try? Let me know in the comments!
