Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation
September 25, 2012
About 7,000 teens drop out of school every year, according to the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics. A large portion of these teens are LGBTQ.
About nine out of 10 LGBTQ students experience some sort of harassment in school, according to the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s 2009 National School Climate Survey. It’s no wonder LGBTQ kids drop out.
So, what are people doing about it? Well, Mother Monster (aka Lady Gaga) decided to start a foundation dedicated to pushing the boundaries of acceptance. She partnered with her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, and created the Born This Way Foundation.
The Born This Way Foundation focuses on creating safe spaces for LGBTQ teens, teaching young people how to create change and providing the opportunity for them to do so. These core pillars of the Born This Way Foundation, can be simplified as SSO—safety, skills and opportunity.
Unfortunately, the foundation hasn’t done anything yet, as it is still in the funding stage. However, all the Little Monsters, including myself, are anxiously awaiting a chance to take action. We know that whatever project Born This Way does will be big and special—like Lady Gaga herself.
