We’ve all heard of those egg or sack-of-flour babies handed out in health classes to show how difficult it is to care for a baby. Well, DoSomething.org’s Pregnancy Text campaign offers a new spin on this health class classic.

I texted “BABY” to 38383, and immediately, I got a text telling me to get some sleep, because tomorrow I would be getting texts from my phone baby over a twelve-hour period. Cool, I thought, It’s like having a Tamagotchi. But I couldn’t have been more wrong. I was about to learn that my Tamagotchi—the famous 1996 toy, which I was a big fan of—never needed as much attention as my text baby.

In the morning, my text baby woke up before my alarm even sounded. I was informed via text that my baby was hungry and needed breakfast. Alright, nothing wrong with starting my day a half hour early. Right? Well, throughout the day I received a text every thirty minutes. Text babies apparently do not care if you have an English presentation or chemistry exam; they want to be cuddled, fed, changed and played with all the time. I received texts reminding me that trying to change a baby’s diaper is like “wrestling an ostrich” and that sometimes babies “just . . . keep screaming until [I] figure out [what’s wrong].”

At the end of the twelve hours, after I sang my baby a lullaby, I received a text informing me that I finished the end of the day. I was given the option to ask for tips on safer sex, get information on health rights or get help for teen parents. Instantly, I wanted more information about safer sex. If having a text baby for twelve hours was inconvenient, I could only imagine what having a real baby would be like. For now, I think I’ll stick to taking care of my Tamagotchi.
