Exploring the Teens in NYC Protection+ App
May 30, 2013
I recently downloaded the app, Teens in NYC Protection+. Once you install the app, the first message you see is, “Teens in NYC…have the right to sexual health services without getting permission from parents, girlfriends/boyfriends or anyone else.” The app is basically an easy-to-use search engine to locate sexual health services around New York City. Having this kind of information right at your fingertips is so valuable, and the best part is—it’s free!
I really enjoyed the “What to Expect” section with videos and stories about real teens and their experiences, which I could relate to. Seeing these stories could make you feel more comfortable with going to a health center and getting the services you need. The app also helps you figure out what forms of birth control and/or safer sex methods would work best for you and your partner. The “What to Get” section on condoms and birth control is very straightforward. They break down each method into how to use it, if you need to see a health care provider to get it and if it protects against sexually transmitted diseases. That basic information makes the process of picking out the best form of protection for you not so overwhelming!
The best part of this app is that it simplifies things. Finding a clinic and figuring out the right form of protection goes from something overwhelming to something you can manage on your own. The only thing that bummed me out about this app is that it is specifically for the New York City area. I did go into New York City a few days after downloading the app; it worked efficiently and gave me clinics right near my location.
If you don’t live in the New York City area, Sex, Etc. has a clinic finder on Sexetc.org that you can use. And if you’re in the New York City area, take 30 seconds to download the Teens in NYC Protection+ app, and check out how awesome it is. Share your experiences with the app with us!
