Nicky Case’s Coming Out Simulator 2014 is an online game that allows players to experience what it’s like to come out to parents. This game, which combines a serious conversation with quirky humor, isn’t so much a game but more of an interactive story inspired by Nicky Case’s actual experience coming out. Like a choose-your-own-adventure book this game presents you with choices, which not only control how the other characters react but alters the way the story is told as well. Characters remember choices you make, which have an impact on the way you interact with them later in the game. For instance, in the game your mother asks you about what you are doing the next day twice, in an attempt to catch you in a lie, so the way you answer her really makes a difference. Not every choice is serious though, some are funny and don’t make an impact on the story, such as choosing between “what,” “whaaat” and “whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.”

What makes the game so powerful, as well as memorable, is how personal the interactive narrative feels. I’m certain this game will entertain those who have experienced coming out firsthand and those who haven’t because it provides a somewhat humorous take on what can be a difficult conversation. This game can also educate people on the coming out process. It depicts a real person’s coming out story, which makes it a good educational tool for both allies and people who are planning to come out or might have had a similar experience coming out to their parents.
