Meet the Staff

Maura Freeland

Handsome and Rascal. No, those aren’t words describing 18-year-old Maura Freeland; they’re the names of her thoroughbred eventing horse and her pet dog. Speaking of names, Maura says that hers translates to darkness and despair in Irish, which she’s not thrilled about. She says she was hoping for her name to translate to something happier like “Queen of Sunshine” or something with a more accurate description of her fun and driven personality. In her free time, Maura enjoys taking pictures of meals she has made, listening to Ted Talks and going to antique stores. The youngest of three siblings, she’s already mastered the art of the ukulele and is the president of the Community in Action Club at Lawrence High School. Maura is excited to write for Sex, Etc. because she feels passionately about health (sparked by her sister who has a public health degree). She says Sex, Etc. has inspired her, and she enjoys reading and talking about it with her friends.
